As Puja Rai, aspiring rock singer walks into CyberSansar’s office, my mind rushes towards her music video, “Aaudaichu ma thayha..” My imagination of a fiery girl (as her video demonstrated and as rock singers are) breaks instantly as I stand face to face with her. To my contrary, she appears to be a very simple and a shy girl next door. Young but talented and all ready to make a mark, I can read Puja’s utmost determination in her ambitious eyes. We sit down for an exclusive interview.

Here are some excerpts of the interview.

1. Tell us something about your childhood.

I led a very normal life as a child until my dad died. Along with emotional pains, we also had to face financial problems. My mom was the only earning member of the house. She used to work as a nurse in Kalimati Clinic. I still remember those days when I and my two sisters eagerly waited to get a pair of new clothes in Dashain. But most of the times, we couldn’t afford it and would cry. However, I appreciate my mom who always encouraged us to face any situations in life easily.

2. What was your aim in life?

As a child, my aim kept changing. Sometimes, I wanted to become a doctor or a lawyer. But slowly, my aim focused on music.

3. How did music interest you?

I was always interested in music and my family supported me immensely. Inspite of my family’s economic problems, my mom allowed me to record my first song in class eight. After that, I strongly wanted to create my own album. I also used to participate in different musical programs in schools and colleges.

4. Were there any struggles during the making of your debut album?

Yes. Plenty of them. I had to face such struggles because I was new and completely raw. I had to decide for myself about choosing right songs, lyrics, compositions and arrangements. There was always a fear whether the companies would agree to launch my album or not. Also, I had to wait for hours in the studio without any valid reason. I felt really humiliated at that time.

5.What does music mean to you?

Music is my passion. It is a medium of art to express my feelings. It’s a prior part of me.

6. Tell us about your album.

My album, “Basanta” is a tribute to my late father, “Basanta Kumar Rai”. It has altogether nine songs. I have also sung one English song which is based on life and reality. The song, “aaudaichu” has a music video. I am presently making another video of the song, “Dikka bhaye ma…”

7. Besides music, what are you involved in?

I have just finished my bachelor levels. Currently I am waiting for my results.

8. Your inspiration?

My mom is my biggest inspiration. Ever since I remember, I have been a great fan of Alanis Morisette.

9. How are your days moving these days?

Wonderfully well. People are appreciating my music. I have also been attending different musical programs, meeting new people and visiting new places. Life’s fun and excited.
