Review of Sudip Giri's Frenz
-Reviewed by Sanoop Poudel
All songs, music and lyrics composed by Sudip Giri
This album is different from his previous one. He has explored several genres of music and has ultimately succeeded in justifying them well. His style of singing is quite different in this album when compared to the previous one although he shows the lack of good control over the voice, especially at the higher register in some of the songs, which is technically acceptable. His songs and compositions are of a higher level and the music on this album is standard. His attempt on fusing the genres is highly appreciating.
Sudip's 'Frenz' has songs that vary from musical styles to his typical singing style. 'Frenz' is his attempt to bring up his style of singing. With a change in music, no doubt the music arrangements and instrumentation together with a good studio sound has added a lot to make his album a good one. However he still has a long way to go if he wants to improve more on doing such an experimental work within rock, fusion and his own style of composition. Sudip seems to be a good lover of blue music and country music as they can be heard in most of his songs.
Sannani
This song is a blend of western folk music "Deuda" in the beginning, again well fused with eastern Tharu cultural singing in the verse. It is a very jubilant and rock intro that can surely provoke anyone. Sudip has done very well in this song because he has tried out something that was not expected of him. So there is obviously enough room for improvement in doing fusion music in future.
Nabijhaune Phool
It is a soft melody song with tragic lyrics, a very pleasing music that can create a sense of melancholy. His singing adds more feel to the words but he should have avoided the excessive techniques.
Sakdina Kina
This song starts as if it was a funk music but changes its form as the song begins. Simple melody but well arranged music, especially the guitar work which gives a form of blues music in the interlude. One can easily make out that this is a typical Sudip style.
Aakha bhariko Aashnu
It is a slow rock that provides a smoother melancholy progression. A good melody on the singing line but contradicts the ginner as blues can be heard in the music but no such style of blues singing as heard in the song.
Basantale Chodedekhi
It is a modern pop type song with synthesized sounds used, a typical boys band type. With tragic lyric this song is sung very well.
Kasko Yaadharu
It is a typical Nepali pop type with a good difference in the music melody and singing. The use of the highest vocal register at times could have been done more well. Sudip's high range is quite good but he also should learn to control it well.
Thahai Thiyo
It is a slow and soft rock with good guitar works and arrangement. The interpretation of works synchronizes well with his singing.
Bhana Timi
It is a song with a complete difference in this album. It begins with typical eastern classical sound that is Tanpura and Sitar. It is an experimental number within the pop music. The singing here has nothing to do so much when compared to the music. A highly proficient instrumentation of Tabala and Guitar called "Jugal Bandi" makes this song highly standard.
